Commencement of the SIDEPARK Bridge Span Launching: A Major Milestone in Project Execution

The critical stage of launching the main bridge spans of Sidepark has begun—a highly specialized process that plays a decisive role in completing this structure.

Due to the project’s construction sequence, the concrete skeleton was built first, followed by the installation of the steel spans. Given the particular conditions, it was not possible to directly assemble and install the southern and northern spans in their final positions. Therefore, these spans were initially assembled ahead on a temporary chassis and then, using mono strand jacks installed behind the twin columns, were pulled onto the chassis during the launching process. Afterwards, the spans were guided through slots embedded in the columns and floor levels, and finally placed in their designed positions.

In this operation, components measuring nearly 12 meters in width, 15 meters in height, and weighing over 150 tons were moved more than 6.5 meters, passing through a slot with only 7 millimeters of clearance. Executing such an operation demanded exceptional precision and highly accurate calculations.

One of the major challenges was controlling the negative camber and slope variations of the spans. To address this, supports installed on the chassis, elastomeric–Teflon pads, and filler plates were used, ensuring that once the spans were positioned, they matched the intended camber and slope design. These pads not only enabled precise slope control but also reduced surface friction, allowing the massive assemblies to be moved with significantly less force and under safer, more controlled conditions.

The successful launching of these spans marks not only one of the most important milestones in the Sidepark project but also a rare example of carrying out such a heavy and complex operation within the country.
